NUKOLI‘I — The relief from chronic pain and increasing joint mobility to improve the quality of life was the driving theme of the Bone & Joint 2007 Update meeting Saturday at the Hilton Kaua‘i Beach Resort.
“This is an extension of the community education programs we’ve hosted at Wilcox Hospital,” said Lani Yukimura, one of the steering committee members for the event. “We wanted to have a nice setting where people could be comfortable, so we worked with the Hilton people to put this event together.”
More than 300 people turned out for the half-day meeting that featured speakers from the Bone & Joint Center at the Kaua‘i Medical Clinic.
“We have community health education offerings throughout the year, but this is huge,” Yukimura said in an e-mail. “(S. Kalani Brady) is such a television celebrity as well as a great doctor from Straub (Hospital).” Yukimura said following the presentations moderated by Brady, director of education for the Hawai‘i Pacific Health Conference Services, the public was invited to ask questions which would be fielded by a panel assembled from the speakers.
Questions were collected and delivered to the panel by volunteers from both Waimea and Kaua‘i high school’s health academy, Yukimura explained.
Heather Hopkins set the tone for the day with her “Non Surgical Treatments for Arthritis” presentation. Hopkins was the event’s program chair.
“Almost all the speakers touched on arthritis,” Yukimura said. “The exhibit area featured a booth focussing on arthritis as well.”
A variety of areas dealing with bones and joints were set up in a separate meeting room so people were free to get a closer look at the products and services being offered.
Hopkins’ presentation was followed by Dr. Mohaed Aboyoussef speaking on “Rheumatoid Arthritis” while Tyler Chihara touched on “Painful Conditions of the Foot” before the group broke for a mid-morning break.
“Total Joint Replacement” by Dr. Floyd Pohlman, “Shoulder Injuries and Pain” by Dr. Timothy Schendel, “Common Hand Problems” by Dr. Catherine Shin, and “Hip Resurfacing and Joint Preservation” by Dr. David Rovinsky rounded out the presentations.
The Bone & Joint Wellness, Update 2007, was hosted by the Bone & Joint Center at the Kaua‘i Medical Center Clinic, an affiliate of Hawai‘i Pacific Health.
The Bone & Joint Center provides comprehensive services on Kaua‘i, 24 hours a day, seven days a week for emergency orthopedic care.
The center’s team includes specialists who provide orthopedic surgery, sports medicine, rheumatology, neurology, podiatry, massage therapy and physical/rehabilitative medicine.
