Salud ‘Sally’ Samiano
Salud “Sally” (Julian) Samiano, of Hanama‘ulu, died at her home on Aug. 25, 2007, at the age of 87.
Born in Laoag, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, on Oct. 24, 1919, she was a retired sales clerk with Robert’s Shoe Store.
Preceded in death by husband Jose Samiano Sr. and son Marcial Samiano; brother Johnny Fabian; and daughter-in-law Mary Samiano, she is survived by sons Jose (Virginia) Samiano Jr. of O‘ahu, Dante Samiano of Los Angeles, Rudy (Katherine) Samiano of Wailua Homesteads and Melvin (Constance) Samiano of Los Angeles; daughters Carmen (Richard) Ubasa of Honolulu, Evelyn (Marcelino) Taroc of Wailua Homesteads; hanai daughter Cecilia Ramirez of Honolulu; brother Herman (Yolanda) Fabian of Hanama‘ulu; sister Fe Flores of Kapa‘a; daughter-in-law Emily Samiano of Honolulu; sister-in-law Nina Fabian of Chicago; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren. Friends may visit with the family from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church; Mass at 11 a.m. followed by burial at the Kauai Memorial Gardens. Casual attire is suggested.

Dean Hesapene
Dean Patrick Hesapene died on Aug. 16, 2007, at Balboa Naval Medical Center in San Diego, Calif., at the age of 51.
Born on April 19, 1956, in Waimea, he is preceded in death by his brother Kenneth “Choch” Hesapene and his mother-in-law Rosalita Ogawa. He is survived by his wife Juno, his children Jeremy, Channin and Jessica and his grandson Jaylen, all of San Diego. He is also survived by parents Cora and Magua Hesapene of Kekaha, brothers Marvin (Iris) and David (Camille) of Hanapepe, sisters Verna (Mike) Kirsch of Bremerton, Wash., Sharon (Byron) Ariola of Lihu‘e and Audrey (Steve) Franco of Kekaha.
Visitation with family will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, at St. Theresa’s Church in Kekaha, Rosary will follow. The celebration of Dean’s life will be at 2 p.m. at the Kekaha Neighborhood Center. Balboa Cremation Services assisted the Hesapene family with cremation arrangements.
Benita Dumayas Batangan
Benita Dumayas Batangan of ‘Ele‘ele died Aug. 10, 2007, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, at the age of 84.
Born Aug. 22, 1922, in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, she was a homemaker.
She is survived by daughters Apolonia (Stanley Oshima) Ramelb and Melchora (Monico) Paguirigan; son Jose (Magdalena) Batangan and sister Eduvejes Patinga; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel in Koloa and again from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, at ‘Ele‘ele Sacred Hearts Church where Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial to follow at Hanapepe Public Cemetery.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary.
Emilio Olivas
Emilio “Spud” Olivas, of Lihu‘e, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Aug. 23, 2007, at the age of 80.
Born in Waimea on Sept. 8, 1926, “Spud” was very active in the community and a very dependable part of many worthy causes. He was an avid bowler, long-time fisherman and frequent visitor with his friends to Las Vegas. He retired as an administrator with the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations on Kaua‘i. He was also a long-time member of the East Kaua‘i Lions Club. He will be remembered for the wonderful music he shared with all.
Preceded in death by his parents Fruto and Felipa Olivas, brother Flor Miguel, sisters Catalina Valdez and Consuelo Cuaresma, he is survived by his wife Mercedes L. Olivas; son Michael Olivas, Sr. of Lihu‘e; daughter Marlene Greer of Lihu‘e; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; brother Rick Miguel of California.
Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Lihue Christian Church, service officiated by Rev. Donna Faith Elderege will begin at 10:30 a.m. Bright aloha attire is suggested. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a favorite charity or the East Kaua‘i Lions Club.

Shizuno S. Muraoka
Shizuno S. Muraoka, of Koloa, died Aug. 14, 2007, at her home at the age of 99.
Born Feb. 15, 1908, in Koloa, she was self-employed.
She is survived by sons Charles (Yoshiko) Muraoka, Takashi (Dorothy) Muraoka, Satoshi “Sugar” (Virginia) Muraoka; daughters Helen (Allen) Yamada, Thelma (Roy) Mukaisu, and Myra (James) Gushiken; 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Private services were held. Arrangements were handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
