HANAPEPE — Kevin Aguilar had the highest point total of the day, but Waimea High School dropped to Kaua‘i High School by 52 points at the KIF air riflery matches Thursday.
On the other hand, strapped by just five women shooters, Kaua‘i succumbed to the Menehune, 1127-1115 points.
“It’s not about winning or losing,” said Douglas Nobriga, the Kaua‘i coach. “I just told the kids to do the best they could do and that was good enough.”
In the boys’ arena, Aguilar topped the Menehune men with a 251 total (90-82-79). His performance was challenged by Kaua‘i’s Kelan Adachi who posted 90s in his prone and kneeling positions but dropped to a 69 in the standing for a 249 point-total as the Raiders pulled ahead 1196-1144.
Jason Cabot, shooting in the second relay with Adachi posted 250 (89-89-72) to lead the Raiders, followed by Adachi, Shaun Koide (93-87-63-243), Jonathan Cabot (90-82-61-233) and Elliot Yamamoto (78-83-60-221).
Aguilar (90-82-79-251) was followed by Ty Shitanaka (88-67-73-228), Geoffrey Tran (90-83-54-227), Jared Coleman-Stark (87-71-63-221) and Richard Arruda (86-71-60-217).
In the girls’ arena, the Menehune reversed the situation as Kaua‘i’s Megan Rasay (91-83-66-240) posted the highest individual point total, but the team fell to Waimea who were led by Syanne Sagawa posting a 238 (82-74-82), Sagawa finished with the best score in the standing position at 82 points.
Following the returning Menehune, LeeAnn Sagucio (88-78-59-225), Ceci Sun (86-74-64-224), Rachel Wright (83-76-64-223) and Brandi Briones (88-64-65-217) rounded out the team effort.
Rasay was followed by Maureen Sibolboro (84-76-79-239) with a gap to first-year shooter Valerie Ganiban (87-79-57-223), Nicole Cristobal (88-67-55-210) and Jennifer Tagupa (83-64-56-203).
No results were available for the Island School/Kapa‘a High School match at press time.
Waimea will travel to Kapa‘a next Thursday while Island School gets hosted by Kaua‘i. Both matches start at 3 p.m.
