Thirty-two Garden Island residents make up the state’s 2007 Boards and Commissions from Kaua‘i.
Kathleen Watanabe, Judge for the Fifth Circuit Court, administered the Oath of Office for the new members during the Conferring of Commissions ceremony Friday morning that was presided over by Lt. Governor James “Duke” Aiona and his staff.
Aiona said the members of the state’s boards and commissions have an opportunity to make a difference by getting involved and thanked the individuals for stepping forward.
According to a press release from the governor’s office, nine members of the newly-established Governor’s Kaua‘i Community Advisory Council were among those being sworn in.
“The volunteers from Kaua‘i who serve on boards and commissions provide valuable input that helps our administration improve government services as well as enhance the quality of life on Kaua‘i and around the state,” Aiona said. “Governor Lingle and I encourage other Kaua‘i residents to volunteer to serve on a board or commission.”
Watanabe, a former Cabinet member of the Lingle administration before returning home to become a judge, added she always wanted to be a board member because she felt it was exciting to be at the level where things were happening.
She noted that despite her getting over a bout with a cold, the opportunity to administer the Oath of Office to the new board and commission members was worth coming out of bed for.
Aiona said about 1,300 people statewide serve on more than 160 boards and commissions that were established by the state constitution, state statutes, or executive orders.
