Descendants of Fui and Hiroki Muraoka recently gathered on Kaua‘i for a family reunion.
Fui and Hiroki arrived on Kaua‘i on June 28, 1902, and lived in Mana before moving to the Lawai Stable Camp while Hui was employed by the McBryde (sugar) Plantation.
Two of their 10 children were here for the reunion — Hitoe Kamm, now 88, of Honolulu, and Ikito Muraoka, 85, of Koloa. One other surviving sibling, Sueko Goon, is now 94 and residing in New York, but was unable to attend the gathering.
About 120 members of the Muraoka family met from California, Idaho, Illinois, Virginia, the Big Island, Maui, O‘ahu and Kaua‘i to celebrate a weekend at the Hanama‘ulu Restaurant and a big picnic at the Po‘ipu Beach Park.
A family tree listed 288 names from the original couple arriving here from the Kumamoto prefecture in Kyushu, Japan. That chart was displayed for all to see and commemorative T-shirts bearing the family crest were presented to family members along with a family directory which included the early family history.
A cookbook with family favorite recipes and anecdotes completed the memorabilia visitors could take back with them.
