Residents against the Superferry have planned a protest to take place today, in what they cite as a “brazen disregard for the rule of law.”
The protest stems from the decision made by officials with the Hawaii Superferry to begin operation two days ahead of schedule with $5 fares.
Hui-R, a group of Kauaians against the arrival of the Superferry with the lack of an Environmental Impact Study, is organizing a gathering at the Kalapaki Park to protest the vessel’s launch.
The group is asking concerned residents and visitors are asked to join in support of the county’s resolution requesting an Environmental Impact Study before commencement of services to Kaua‘i.
Hui-R is calling for direct action against the Superferry to prevent it from offloading it’s cargo today at Nawiliwili Harbor.
Plans for the protests and calls for civil disobedience were developed at Saturday’s Hui-R community forum in Lihu‘e. More than 100 concerned citizens picketed the Superferry’s Open House to protest its arrival to educate others about the call to boycott until an environmental assessment and impact study are completed.
According to a prepared statement from the group issued yesterday, “Hui-R acknowledges and appreciates the Hawai‘i Supreme Court ruling decision to require the state to proceed with the EA/EIS process before moving forward with the Superferry operations.
“Hui-R also advocates for a statewide boycott of the Superferry operations until the EA/EIS issue is resolved. Sen. Gary Hooser and Rep. Mina Morita and others have issued statements of support in regards to encouraging others to join in boycotting the Superferry until the EA/EIS issues are properly addressed.”
The statement went onto include that it stands in solidarity with the Polynesian Kingdom of Atooi whose leaders have served notice to Superferry officials to abort the operation until the EIS and EA are done.
