Build Grove Farm road
In every meeting of the Planning Commission and/or the Kauai County Council, we move even farther away from the simple public issue; i.e. “Will Grove Farm Properties be required to meet its legal obligation to build a four- lane road from the current terminus of Nuhuo Road to Niumalu Road;” an obligation undertaken in return for a re-zoning that will permit the development of the Ulu Ko subdivision. Instead, over the years, Grove Farms Properties has obscured the issue, making diversionary, extended requests. Our Planning Commission and our council keep holding meetings as though the previous obligations didn’t exist and Grove Farm Properties keeps getting additional, lucrative re-zonings that will continue to bring additional growth in traffic.
Let’s get back to basics and say to Grove Farm Properties: You requested a re-zoning for which you promised a road … build it.

Proud to have Spear as friend
I have known Dr. Spear my whole life. Even as a child I knew he was a brilliant doctor. Ask him about any medical procedure, condition, or treatment and he’ll fill you in. I knew that when I was sick he would listen closely, examine me thoroughly, and I would leave on the road to recovery. And he wasn’t only good with medicines and illness. When my brother tore open his foot on his bike chain, right down to the bone and tendon, we rushed him to the Hanapepe Clinic and Dr. Spear stitched him right up, good as new. When I had a strange growing mole on my back, Dr. Spear had me sit down with my head resting on the exam table and carved it out, cracking jokes to ease my fears, telling me, “no laughing, Ka‘iu!” Once we rushed to the Doc’s house in the middle of the night where he performed emergency surgery in his parlor on my father’s abscessed finger. Even more, during Hurricane ‘Iniki, it was the Doc who opened his home to my family for shelter. Afterwards, our house destroyed in the storm, we lived with him and his family for months until we got back on our feet.
I could go on and on about all the ways he has helped my family over the years. We are not the only family with stories like these. Over the years, he has done great service to the Kaua‘i community, especially the Westside.
Tex Spear is a good doctor who truly cares for his patients. He is a good man with a good heart. I am proud to know him and have such a friend.

Looking forward to great school year
The teachers, counselors, and students of Kauai High School deserve a heartfelt thank you for presenting a warm welcome during their open house. Teacher presentations were concise and informative. Counselors answered questions and had test materials readily available. The Kauai High Band performed with gusto. Other students also assisted during the evening, some served as guides around the campus.
Parents appreciated that teachers stayed in their classrooms until 8 that night to share and explain what happens in the classroom. The teachers’ effort did Kauai high proud.
And thanks to PTSA for dinner.
Looking forward to a great school year after such a great start.
