Officials with the Hawai‘i Superferry yesterday announced that its first day of service with inter-island voyages between Maui and O‘ahu and Kaua‘i and O‘ahu will be Aug. 28.
“We are very excited to announce Alakai’s inaugural voyage on August 28,” Hawai‘i Superferry President and Chief Executive Officer John Garibaldi said in a combined statement.
“After many years in the planning, Hawai‘i residents, businesses and visitors will have a new inter-island transportation alternative that provides the opportunity to travel with your own vehicle. We take great pride in the unique travel experience that Hawaii Superferry will offer passengers and look forward to our maiden voyage.”
Passengers on Hawai‘i Superferry’s Alakai can expect food, entertainment and shopping, as well as on-board movies, according to a press release from the ferry’s publicist.
Ferry terminals will open at least two hours prior to departure and passengers are recommended to arrive at least one hour prior to departure.
Terminal gates will close 30 minutes prior to departure. Hawai‘i Superferry staff will greet passengers upon entering terminal and efficiently conduct security and agriculture screening, document checks, and assist passengers through the process.
Service will be offered daily between Maui and O‘ahu and will be offered Sunday to Friday between Kaua‘i and O‘ahu. The voyages are expected to take three hours each way. When a second ferry arrives in 2009, service will begin between O‘ahu and the Big Island and a second daily O‘ahu-Maui roundtrip will begin.
One-way fares listed below include taxes and fees, but exclude a fuel surcharge which will be added to passenger and vehicle fares. Through Aug. 31, travel surcharge will be between $10 to $19. For non-commercial vehicles, the fuel surcharge will be from $11 to $32. The fuel surcharge will vary and is calculated monthly based on the price of fuel.
