Kaua‘i, Kapa‘a and Waimea high schools will play double headers today for the 6th Annual Kaua‘i Challenge Volleyball Tournament.
Kaua‘i will play the Waveriders of Kealakehe High School at 5:15 p.m. and the Huskies of Fairmont Prep of California at 7:45 p.m. Both games will be played at Kaua‘i High School.
Kapa‘a hosts the Raiders of ‘Iolani School at 5:15 p.m. and the Lancers of La Salle High School of California.
On the Westside, Waimea will host the Mililani Trojans at 4 p.m. and the Highlanders of Upland High School in California at 6:30 p.m.
There are 24 teams participating in this tournament — 12 from California and 12 from across Hawai‘i.
Because this tournament has become so popular over the years, getting a spot in the tournament is pretty tough. There’s already a waiting list for next year.
“We’ve already fielded calls for next year,” said Kaua‘i head coach Rich Roberts. “One of the teams is from New Orleans.”
But Roberts and fellow coaches agree that they will limit the Mainland teams to 12.
Roberts likes this tournament because it gives the Kaua‘i teams opportunities to play other teams. Because the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation is small in comparison to O‘ahu, Maui and the Big Island conferences, this tournament gives them practice.
“They’re not just playing them over and over again,” Roberts said.
The tournament’s pool play begins today with the finals scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Kaua‘i High.
