The public is invited to a tandem surfing clinic and exhibition hosted by Kauaians Kalani Vierra and Blanche Yoshida on Aug. 18 and 19.
Two clinics will be held each day with an exhibition to close off the day. Clinics are scheduled for noon and 2 p.m. with the exhibition taking place at 5 p.m.
The clinics and exhibition will take place in conjunction with the Kaua‘i Surfing Association’s annual surf meet at PK’s.
Vierra and Yoshida are raising funds to travel to Spain where they want to compete for the World Tandem title.
“We have been to O‘ahu, Maui, Australia and California for competitions, and recently returned from France where we were invited to do an exhibition at the Roxy Jam in Biarritz,” Yoshida said
in an e-mail.
Yoshida said she and Vierra have been competing in the first World Tandem Tour and are currently ranked at No. 1 on the Tour.
“The last leg of the tour will be held in Spain in September,” Yoshida said. “We have a chance at bringing home the title to Kaua‘i. Wouldn’t that be awesome?”
To help raise funds, T-shirts will be available for $20 each. Additionally, there will be a chance to win a surfboard for a $5 donation.
A stand-up paddle, dinner certificates for the Po‘ipu Beach Broiler, 18 holes of golf at the Kiahuna Golf Club, dinner certificate for the Brennecke’s Beach Broiler, and more will be part of the silent auction that will be featured during the two-day event.
The event is free. Vierra and Yoshida credit their success to the community, their families and surf buddies.
