There were 10 rescues on the Eastside yesterday in two incidents, both due to rip currents.
Kaua‘i County spokesperson Mary Daubert said the first incident occurred at 1:10 p.m., near Kaha Lani Condominiums in the Lydgate area.
“Lifeguards watching the area with binoculars saw four visitors having difficulty in rip currents,” Daubert said. “Two lifeguards, Kaleo Lopez and Eric Pereza, were able to assist them to the beach.”
The second incident occurred in the same area, “about 2 miles from the Lydgate tower,” Daubert said.
That incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. near the Kamalani Bridge.
“Fortunately there were several surfers in the area who helped six local people come in to the beach,” Daubert said.
Area lifeguards advise swimmers to be aware of what to do if caught in a rip current and to be aware of the conditions at hand before swimming.
A popular saying goes, “If in doubt don’t go out.”
To learn strategies for dealing with currents go online to kauaiexplorer.com, which Daubert calls the most comprehenzive source for beach safety information.
Lydgate Beach Park yesterday put up Portuguese Man O’ War warnings after the stinging creatures were sighted in the morning. “Warnings stayed up throughout the day,” Daubert said.
