Kaua‘i’s Boys 14 and Under soccer team, Motiv-8, won the Hawaii International Cup at the competition held from July 12 to 15 on O‘ahu.
In the first match, Motiv-8 played the Hawaii Rush B93 Nike, a team that has won the state championship, the far west regional championship and is going to nationals this year.
Despite being down one player, Motiv-8 shut them out in a 1-0. Lowen Gonzales scored the lone goal, on an assist from Aron Nagao.
In their second match, Motiv-8 played the Honolulu Bulls, whose club hosts the tournament every year. Motiv-8 defeated the Bulls 3-1.
Motiv-8 lost its third match against Hawaii Rush B94 Nike, 0-2, but the team was able to stay in the tournament by winning its next match. In the consolation round, Motiv-8 defeated the Colorado Rush 1-0. Gonzales again scored the lone goal, this time assisted by Taylor Langstaff.
For the championship match, Motiv-8 had to once again play Hawaii Rush B94 Nike. Motiv-8 scrambled against the opposing team, which started out with an all-out attack.
Late in the first half, Zaimana Fernandez scored a goal, which turned the tide for the Kaua‘i club. Fernandez added a second goal, half way through the second half, and Torren Kimura scored a third goal with an assist from Hunter Hudson.
Hawaii Rush B92 Nike managed to score a goal late in the match, but time ran out on them as Motiv-8 won 3-1.
The Hawaii International Cup began 14 years ago and features several top soccer clubs.
There were six teams from Kaua‘i competing at the Hawaii International Cup with teams from Puerto Rico, California, Colorado and Denmark.
