Doug Blumenthal, one of two 18-year-old pros, showed his stuff in the third chukker, Sunday.
With his Global Mortgage team trailing 2-0, Blumenthal netted a pair of goals to stalemate the contest, 3-3 at the end of the third chukker at the ‘Anini Polo Fields.
But, with Nick Galindo, the other 18-year-old pro, playing on Bali Hai Realty’s team, the effort came up short as Bali Hai recovered to take a 6-5 victory in a game filled with long hard shots and aggressive hooking and riding off.
Galindo, who opened the scoring in the opening chukker, announced the final chukker by turning the ball back against Global Mortgage to score for the go-ahead mark.
He followed that score by snaking the ball away from Global’s Peter Cameron and sliding through the pylons for the 5-3 lead.
But Global Mortgage riders were not done as Ronnie Tongg was accompanied by cheering as he galloped down the field for his score that kept the team in the fray, 5-4.
From there, it was a Blumenthal-Tongg matchup as Blumenthal netted his third goal to answer Tongg’s score, Cameron riding hard in pursuit.
With a minute left to play, Tongg netted his third score of the day in a crowd-raising feat as he popped the ball up and took it in for the 6-5 final math at the horn.
Kaua‘i Polo Club matches continue Sunday in ‘Anini with the gates opening at 1:30 p.m. The match starts at 3 p.m.
