WAIMEA — Parents for the Central Florida teams found themselves cheering for other states yesterday at the Kaua‘i Fantasy Softball Tournament at the Waimea Athletic Field.
They shouted “Go Hawaiian” and “Let’s go, Washington.” That’s because Wailana Borrero of Lihu‘e and Elizabeth Guilford of Bellevue, Wash., were recruited to play for their 16 and Under team.
The two Central Florida teams were playing each other and the one team was short two players.
They found Guilford while the team was sightseeing at the Waimea Canyon. Borrero was taking statistics for her father, Darrell, who coaches Lihu‘e’s Central team.
Borrero, who hadn’t hit since the high school state championship in February, scored once and finished 1-for-3 with a single, in Central Florida 2’s 7-3 win over their fellow Floridians.
“It was fun. It was different,” she said. “Their style of play is sort of different from ours.”
She plays with the team again today.
The tournament ran based on pool play yesterday, meaning the teams would be ranked based on their wins and losses.
There were 11 games played.
The Kamikaze from O‘ahu were able to hold their undefeated status, as was the 14 and Under Kapolei Cobras.
There are several games scheduled before the championship games in the afternoon.
