Minors need better protection
No! No! No! Plea bargains should not be given to sex offenders whose victims are children! I agree the young victim should not have to testify in open court, but we need a way for a transcript of a minor’s testimony to be acceptable, or for her testimony to be taken by the judge in private
It is an outrage that this creep has to serve only one year! He is POND SCUM and should receive REAL punishment and our legislators should get busy right now passing laws to provide better ways for minors to testify and to prohibit plea bargains for such crimes.

Frustrated by KMC Billing
We work together. We could not believe our ears when we each independently received a phone call on 6/28/07 from Pam at Pacific Medical Collections. Pam informed us that our past due accounts from Kauai Medical Clinic for co-pays in 2005/2006 had been turned over for collection.
We both pay our bills in full and on time when we receive them. We independently asked Pam what address these bills had been mailed to. Pam gave us addresses where we had never received mail. Kauai Medical Clinic had changed our addresses without our knowledge and billed us for five cycles (months). When they did not receive payment, KMC turned these accounts of less than $50 over to Pacific Medical Collections. No one at KMC had the courtesy to call us to inquire if we had received the bills after two or three months, nor to ask why we had not made payment. If Pam had not called us, we would not have known about these past-due accounts.
We promptly corrected our respective mailing addresses and paid the bills. We also wrote letters of protest to KMC Billing. Will we get an apology? Will KMC ever get their billing straight?
Truly frustrated!

What’s the future for Kaua‘i?
I’ve been living on Maui 15 years, before this I was living in Saipan in the Marianas.
My family and I are what you’d call small island people, and I use to think at one time Maui would be this life.
Maui has flipped upside down in the past five years and it’s becoming the next O‘ahu, and the lifestyle already feels like California.
If the people of Kaua‘i don’t wake up and see what’s happening to Maui, then you are going to be next.
I can’t stand living the fast pace Maui has become, and I’m considering moving my family to Kaua‘i. We have never been to Kaua‘i, but I do know that it is smaller and slower, at least for now it is, but what will its future hold?
I’d love to hear from the people of Kaua‘i responding back to this letter telling me your thoughts on the future of Kaua‘i.
Do you think Kaua‘i will remain faithful to its roots as an island, or one day be completely cemented over into the next O‘ahu too?

Sharing Kauai Path
Thank you, Ray Holmes, for your friendly opinion piece that appeared July 19 with observations of bicyclists’ lack of etiquette on the new section of Ke Ala Hele Makalae.
As this is an exciting and attractive new facility in our community, it is understandable that there will be a period of adjustment as users learn how to share the path.
For safety reasons, at this time Kauai Path does not endorse use of the Kapa‘a to Kealia path (currently a construction site, not yet a part of the County’s park system) until the facility is more complete and ready for the public’s enjoyment and general use.
Mr. Holmes’ observation that signage is necessary to establish path etiquette is correct. Additionally, Kauai Path is now recruiting Path Ambassadors — volunteers who will be trained to assist path users in a variety of ways, and a big aspect of their role on Ke Ala Hele Makalae will be to help set the standards of path etiquette for the safety and enjoyment of all.
Persons interested in joining and serving the strolling, walking, jogging, and bicycling community as Path ambassadors are encouraged to contact the program’s coordinator through the KauaiPath.org web site. Mahalo.

I decided that if Sen. Harry Reid required The United States of America Senate to stay up all night to make the necessary changes in the most important issue of our time, then I would stay up too and listen to what everyone had to say about BushCo’s illegal occupation of Iraq.
I learned quickly that Republicans had talking points. Most often used was “This is a Political Stunt” or “Our Troops Deserve Better than this Political Stunt.” What was pointed out is that reason has been replaced by sloganeering and whiney complaints of stay up all night.
As the Republicans complained about their one sleepless night, they continued to protect their Deranged Boy King when they could be restoring our constitution, bringing our troops home and protecting our borders. Borders that are wide open for their New World Order Profiteering with no concern for American security. The Republicans never once mentioned as they ready themselves for another vacation that our Honorable American Troops are in 140 degree heat one frightful sleepless night after another for several years with no relief insight.
The Republicans never mentioned they are going on vacation as is the Iraqi government. Only the Iraqis will likely go to The Rivera, as far away from their problems as they can get while Americans lose hundreds more brave young troops and the Iraqis lose thousands of their own citizens, senselessly slaughtered in the market place trying to buy bread for their children.
This nonthinking partisan treason must stop and until it does Sen. Harry Reid needs to be encouraged to keep the Senate in session throughout August until what is being demanded by Americans to end this failed strategy and our reputation is restored along with our constitution.
Kay Bailey Hutchinson, a shameful excuse for a senator who should have retired years ago, tried to say that this war was as important as WWI, WWII and Korea. I guess she is right if you consider who her supports are…, War Profiteers who the same people including the Bush Family who profited from all previous wars of the 20th Century.
What a total disaster for a Senate that was once considered the most respected deliberative body in the world and has descended in to a morass of vulgar lies, torture, profiteering, slaughter of innocents and the ultimate denigration of forced prostitution of children so they can eat.
Only three Republicans have joined with Americans, Chuck Hagel, Olympia Snow and Gordon Smith and we should remember to thank them for performing their duty in the face of treason and I would assume threats from their leadership and The Deranged Boy King.
