Former Kapa‘a High School baseball player, Micah Furtado, leaves today for Frisco, Texas, after being promoted to the Frisco Roughriders, a Double A team for the Texas Rangers.
The former Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation Player of the Year and one of Lewis and Clark’s hitting standouts, hit his first grand slam of his pro career Tuesday against the Stockton A’s.
That was his second home run in his 3-5 showing against Stockton.
His other hit in that game was another long ball, a triple.
Playing for the Bakersfield Blaze as a second baseman for the past two years, the 170- pound, 25-year-old Furtado, has whacked four HR s since May and holds a batting average of .248 with 45 RBIs and 7 stolen bases.
Furtado, who was drafted by Texas in 2003, has 12 HRs total for Bakersfield.
In his first season, he appeared in 63 games and went 56-of-234 at the plate with 10 doubles, one triple and one home run.
He drove in 32 runs and scored 30 times. Furtado also was 7-of-8 in stolen bases, drew 20 walks and struck out 31 times.
In 2004, Furtado played for the Clinton Lumber Kings.
Last year, Furtado played Hawaii Winter Baseball for the Honolulu Sharks where he hit .261 in 23 at bats.
His parents are Clifford and Patty Furtado.
According to his mother, Kaua‘i High School baseball players had an opportunity to watch Furtado play during a recent trip the Red Raider boys took to Bakersfield.
Furtado graduated from Kapa‘a in 2000.
That same year, Kapa‘a won the KIF championship for baseball and Furtado received Player of the Year honors.
He was also named the Scholar Athlete of the year.
He was a two-time conference batting champion, batting .600 (2000) and .524 (1999)
Furtado went on to play for Lewis and Clark State.
