County officials yesterday urged Kaua‘i residents and nonprofits to take advantage of free mulch available to the public at the Hanapepe and Lihu‘e transfer stations.
Unprocessed green waste is shredded into a rough product that can be used for weed reduction and moisture retention in soil around established plants.
The county’s green waste diversion program has generated the mulch since the mid-1990s to help save landfill space, said Troy Tanigawa, solid waste program administrative officer.
Residents should ask a facility attendant at the transfer station for direction on how to pick up the mulch, he added.
Whatever mulch remains will be utilized as feedstock for the production of compost by county contractors, a county press release states.
The transfer stations are open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. except holidays.
The Lihu‘e transfer station is located at 3450 Ahukini Road. The Hanapepe refuse transfer station is at 4380 Lele Road.
