Ronnie Tongg netted six scores and fueled the game with excitement, but CJ’s Steak and Seafood came up short, 9-7, against the Island Ace Hardware team in Kaua‘i Polo Club action, Sunday.
Doug Blumenthal and Nick Galindo shared the scoring honors for the victorious Island Ace Hardware team with Blumenthal netting five goals and Galindo adding the remainder in the win.
From the onset, Island Ace Hardware set the pace of the game as Blumenthal ignited the crowd on a sweeping take-away and score in the opening chukker.
Enter Tongg whose scoring run was intercepted by Blumenthal and capitalized.
Tongg was able to snake in a goal for CJ’s late in the chukker, and put up the only goal in the second chukker. That effort saw Island Ace Hardware with a 3-2 lead at the half, despite Tongg’s strong showing on the field.
Tongg opened the third chukker with a game-tying shot, bringing the crowd to its feet.
Blumenthal answered to preserve Island Ace Hardware’s lead, and a 60-yard penalty 4 goal against a defended goal from Galindo kept the lead intact.
But Tongg was not done and a late shot saw the chukker end 6-4 in favor of Island Ace Hardware.
Blumenthal and Tongg battled through the final chukker with each player netting two goals each to equalize the offensive showing.
Scott Sims, backing up a play from Tongg to Kamalu Sheldon, scored on the backup play.
But Blumenthal answered and the clock ran out on the CJ’s effort.
Kaua‘i Polo Club games continue with the gates opening at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at the ‘Anini Polo fields. The game starts at 3 p.m.
