Next month’s potluck/lecture will feature “The Raw Food Diet” with Dr. William Harris. It will be held Aug 5 at noon at the Kapa‘a Neighborhood Center, 4491 Kou St. at Kuhio Highway.
Harris will discuss the virtues of raw nuts, seeds and avocados as components of an optimally healthy raw vegan diet based on fruits and vegetables. He will also include a critique of the high-carb, low-fat dogma.
A vegan for more than 40 years, Harris is a founder and current director of the Vegetarian Society of Hawai‘i. Prior to his retirement he was an emergency physician and the director of the Kaiser Permanente Vegetarian Lifestyle Clinic. He received his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco, and is the author of The Scientific Basis of Vegetarianism.
Everyone is welcome to the vegan potluck luncheon and lecture. Bring a vegan dish and include an ingredient list. Original recipes are encouraged. Potlucks are free and open to the public. Those who prefer not to bring a dish are welcome with a donation of $5. Prizes will be given for best vegan recipes.

Kimie’s Live Mango Pie
Crust
3/4 lb organic cashew bits chopped
1 cup organic dates rolled in coconut
1/4 cup purified water
3 Tbls raw cacao
Sesame or flax seeds if needed
Chop cashews in food processor and place in large bow. Mix raw cacao powder in water until all the powder is dissolved. Place dates in with cashews and mix with a large spoon or fork. Pour cacao in to form a tacky crust. Place in pie pan and spread with fingers. If the mixture is too wet grind some sesame seeds or flax seeds and gently dust the crust.
Filling
3 cups mango slices
1 hand of apple bananas
3-4 Lilikoi
Serinum cherries
Peel and slice into bite sizes 5 or 6 mangos. Peal and mash a hand of apple bananas, if the peal is black the inside is perfect. Gently mix these together and spread into pie crust.
Cut and scoop out lilikoi, spread on top of the pie filling adding a thin layer.
Place serinum cherries on top of the pie. Options include fresh seasonal blueberries or strawberries.
