The Department of Land and Natural Resources will start construction at the Opaeka‘a Falls Lookout at Wailua River State Park today. Improvements will include construction of a new comfort station; sewer system improvements; and related improvements.
“The lookout will remain open during construction and portable toilets will be provided. Construction activity will reduce the amount of parking at the lookout and affect the open space areas between Kuamo‘o Road and the parking lot,” said Allan Smith, DLNR Interim Chairperson, in a press release.
“We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding during the construction of these improvements.”
The contractor for the comfort station replacement project is Colin & Dillon Construction, and work for that project is expected to be completed in November.
The improvements include: new and accessible fixtures in the restrooms; an accessible picnic table; an accessible water fountain; and pathway improvements. The project is estimated to cost $448,000.
The sewer improvements will begin this month and include the construction of a new septic tank and leach field system, closure of the existing large capacity cesspools, and related work. The contractor is BCP Construction of Hawai‘i Inc., and the project is expected to be completed by December. The project cost is $273,700.
The improvements are part of a statewide effort to upgrade the 53 state parks on O‘ahu, Maui, Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i and Moloka‘i and to increase the safety and comfort of all residents and visitors who use the parks.
The multi-year park improvement plan, which DLNR started in 2005, is the first major upgrade to state parks since the parks system was established more than 40 years ago.
Opaeka‘a Falls Lookout is located in Wailua, 2.5 miles south of Kapa‘a, and 1.5 miles west of Kuhio Highway along Kuamo‘o Road.
