On July 14 the Hawai‘i Healing Garden will hold a creative lei contest that includes “edible, medicinal, aromatherapy and recycled” categories. The contest will be held at Kaua‘i Community College and is a fund-raiser for the 2007 Health and Wellness Scholarship fund.
Top Prize in each category is $100. Second and third place winners receive gift certificates to Kaua‘i restaurants.
All leis become the property of Hawai‘i Health Guide and will be sold at a silent auction on July 14 at the Performing Arts Center at KCC as the actual fund-raising event.
Leis must be received at the Kaua‘i Community College Performing Arts Center Lei Registration by 10 a.m. and will be on display until 3 p.m.
Judging will take place at 11:30 a.m. with prizes awarded between noon and 1 p.m. The four categories are: Edible Lei, Medicinal Lei, Aromatherapy Lei, Recycled Materials Lei.
The Edible Lei must be 100 percent edible (no paper, no candy, please). Extra points will be given for organic entries. The Medicinal Lei must be made from plants that have known medicinal or health benefits. The Aromatherapy Lei will be judged on the fragrant aromatic quality of the lei using flowers and leaves. The Recycled Materials lei should embody the theme “be kind to the ‘aina” and made of found or recycled objects. Each lei must also be accompanied by a short paragraph listing all the materials, benefits or uses (if medicinal).
Vendor booths are also available at the Health Expo. Call Anandra George for info at 639-2880, or download an application. The crafts booth fee will be $150 to Hawai‘i Health Guide.com members, and $200 to the general public, with tents, tables and chairs, event T-shirts provided for a booth size of 10 feet by 10 feet.
“We’re especially interested in showcasing native plants, botanical themed products, healthy food, health practitioner services such as massage, health related items and handcrafted, made-in-Hawai‘i items,” said event co-founder Katherine Fisher. “This will be a chance for crafters to showcase their unique wares to an island-wide audience of residents and visitors.”
Not-for-profit community organizations who want to provide information about their groups can participate for a $50 donation.
There will be a wide range of activities, speakers and programs at the festival including children’s art projects, a Japanese tea ceremony, Chinese cooking demonstrations, a labyrinth walk, visits by the Garden Fairy Godmothers, educational lectures on ethnobotanical uses of medicinal plants, an herbs sale, making Hawaiian nose flutes workshop, Hawaiian cultural program, music and entertainment.
