Lorens Chan of Honolulu shot a second round 71 to finish with a 4-under 140 total to claim medalist honors at the USGA Junior Amateur sectional qualifier at Wailua Golf Course yesterday.
Lihu‘e’s TJ Kua fired a 74 to finish with a one-under 143 total to claim second place.
Both Chan and Kua now qualify for the USGA Championship at Boone Valley Golf Course in Missouri starting on July 23.
First round leader Alex Ching finished with a 77 and a 145 total and tied Bradley Shigezawa who shot 70 on. Ching birdied the first hole in a play-off to claim the first alternate position while Shigezawa will be the second alternate.
Thirty-two boys competed in the 36-hole qualifier at Wailua. Play was from the blue tees (6,800 yards) and the weather was warm and calm again throughout the second round of play.
Kua qualified for last year’s Junior Amateur Championship at Rancho Santa Fe in San Diego, Calif. Tadd Fujikawa of Honolulu is exempt from sectional qualifying this year and is already entered in the championship at Boone Valley.
Other Kaua‘i junior golfers who competed in the qualifier were Cory Oride, Wiley Yoshioka, Bronzen Winters, Levi Miyashiro and Sean Mamaclay.
