On Aug. 1, the newly created playgroup “Loving to Learn …for Life!” will welcome its inaugural class.
Director/teacher Shannon Towey states in a press release that she has created a multifaceted year-round program designed to prepare 3-6 year old children for school and to inspire a love of learning. “Loving to Learn … for Life” is licensed by the State of Hawaii and is on the referral list of PATCH (People Attentive to Children). It will offer both three-day and four-day programs. Hours are 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
The playgroup facility is a cottage in Wailua Homesteads designed with young children in mind. While maintaining a warm feeling of home, it is geared for education and experiential learning, the release states. Children will gain self confidence and mastery through enjoyable hands-on learning experiences such as cooking, art, creative projects, gardening, and nature exploration.
A professional educator and innovator, Towey will accept six students at a time, believing that the small group will encourage more “aha!” moments of discovery and understanding than a larger classroom setting.
“I love spending time with children. At this age, they have such a sense of wonder about them, and they are so eager to explore and learn; my job is to encourage them and preserve their joy of learning,” Towey states in the release.
Her pupils will experience teacher/student relationships and interact socially with other children, as well as participate in activities designed to develop a sense of successful school expectations, she states.
“Loving to Learn…for Life!” will benefit the community as Towey hopes to develop sincere, positive relationships with the students and their families, to complement parents’ important roles, and to present her students’ future teachers with children who are confident in their abilities and have developed a love of learning.
A resident of Kaua`i for nearly 20 years, Shannon Towey has been actively working with children the entire time — both professionally and personally. She and her husband John have three children, all born and raised in Hawai‘i. She achieved her B.A. from the University of Washington as the recipient of an academic scholarship, pursued graduate studies at the United Nations and Columbia University, lived in France for a year, and has continued to teach, tutor and mentor in various settings.
