Martin Thomas Rice of Kapa‘a died at home on June 14, 2007, at the age of 58.
Born in Long Beach, Calif. on Oct. 10, 1948, he was the owner and founder of Tradewinds Spice Company. Martin was in the Army and served two tours to Viet Nam then attended Cal State Long Beach College. He moved to Kaua‘i in 1978 and managed the Palace Restaurant at Coco Palms Hotel. He also was past Chair of Kauai Democratic Party and was a civil rights activist and lobbyist at the state Legislature.
He is survived by Fred Rainville, his life partner of over 30 years; father, Merlin and step mother, Jacqueline of California; sister, Wendy (Ray) Faultner of Colorado; step-sister, Linda (Douglas) Holmes of California and step-brother, Richard (Brenda) Philippi of California.
A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, June 19, from 10 a.m. to noon at Kauai Veterans Center in Lihu‘e. The family requests casual attire and gratefully declines flowers.
