Fernandez Jr.
Colan Santos Fernandez Jr., of Lihu‘e, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on June 11, 2007, at the age of 28.
He was born in Lihu‘e on June 26, 1978, and was a forklift operator for Kaua‘i Beverage and Ice Cream Company.
He is survived by fiancée Michele Arakaki; sons Chyson Fernandez and Austen Fernandez; mother Rowena Perreira; brothers Cory (Rosa) Fernandez and Richard (Cherelle Rego Koerte) Perreira; grandmother Trinidad Fernandez; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held today, at the Borthwick Mortuary Chapel in Koloa. Viewing will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Memorial services will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Casual attire is suggested.
Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Thyres Kalen Simao
Thyres Kaylen Simao, of Waikoloa, died June 1, 2007, at Kona Community Hospital at the age of 24.
Born May 6, 1983, in Waimea, he was a landscaper for Arborist Services, LLC in Kamuela and formerly employed with Fisher Construction.
Preceded in death by his brother Kauhi Simao, he is survived by his mother Trudy (William) Silva of Waikoloa; father Luke (Blythe) Simao Sr. of Hanapepe; sisters Zada Simao of Waikoloa and Saydi Silva of Waimea; brothers Dillion Silva of Waimea and Luke Simao Jr. of Hanapepe; maternal grandparents Henry (Cleo) Bermoy of Kalaheo; step-father Mark Silva of Waimea; numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.
A memorial service was held at Holoholokai (Paniau) Beach Park Maunalani. A service will also be held at 4:30 p.m. June 16, at “Inters” Beach in Kekaha. Scattering of ashes will follow immediately.
Arrangements are being handled by Cremation Services of West Hawai‘i.
Hazel V. Brown (Rapozo)
Hazel V. Brown (Rapozo), of Kapa‘a, died at home on June 2, 2007, at the age of 75 after a 17-year battle with thyroid cancer.
At the age of 17, she met her late ex-husband Raymond J. Rapozo in Germany. They married in 1948 and moved to Kaua‘i and had six children. She worked as a cook at St. Catherine Convent and the cafeteria. At the age of 47, she attended adult classes to get her GED and went on to nursing school. She graduated one of the top three in her class, worked at Queen’s Hospital on the orthopedic floor and went on to private duty until she retired.
Preceded in death by son David Rapozo, she is survived by daughter Sandra (Alan) Palmeira of Kapa‘a; sons Nolan (Dee Ann) Rapozo of Lihu‘e, Steve (Diane) Rapozo of Lihu‘e, Raymond (Dorena SanAugustine) Rapozo Jr. of Kealia, Charles (Tina) Rapozo of Hanama‘ulu, Steven Ichiriu of Los Angeles, Michael (Yuki) Ichiriu of San Jose; special friend Dr. Edward Ichiriu of O‘ahu; daughter-in-law Diane Guitierez (David Rapozo); sister Merle Synder of Cincinnati; brother Hobert (Jane) Brown of Minnesota; 27 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at St. Catherine Church on Saturday, June 16. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., Mass to follow. Burial will be private at a later date.
Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Hiromu Ikeda
Hiromu Ikeda, of Kaua‘i, died May 13, 2007, at Silver Springs Rehabilitation Center in Las Vegas, Nev., at the age of 94.
A private service was held Saturday at Kauai Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Ikeda came to Kaua‘i from Hiroshima, Japan, a year after he was born on Aug. 15, 1912. He married Sueko Morinaka. He and his wife founded the Ikeda Barber Shop 62 years ago. In retirement, he enjoyed gardening and Keno.
He is survived by his wife Sueko and children Donald (Ellen) Ikeda of O‘ahu, Carole (Lawrence) Ito of O‘ahu, Barbara (Ken) Oki of Lihu‘e, Malcolm (Marsha) Ikeda of Lihu‘e, and Harry Ikeda, also of Lihu‘e; 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Elsie Okada
Elsie Okada, of Waimea, Kaua‘i, died May 31, 2007, in Honolulu at the age of 88.
Friends may visit with the family Saturday, June 16, at 9 a.m. at Waimea United Church of Christ Stone Church, where a memorial service will follow at 10 a.m.
Jeffrey Wayne
Jeffrey Mitchell Wayne, of Kapa‘a, died in Lihu‘e on May 29, 2007, at the age of 53. He was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and was a singer and song writer, accomplished harmonica player, a certified scuba diver and food service professional.
Preceded in death by his father Joseph E. Wayne Jr., he is survived by mother Philomena Wayne of Tennessee; brothers Joe (Donna Riley) Wayne of Kentucky, Jack (Barbara) Wayne of Kentucky, Jim (Debbie) Wayne of Kentucky and Jerry (Jody) Wayne of West Virginia; numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held in Louisville, Ky.
