Residents asked to conserve water

County officials are asking Kaua‘i residents to voluntarily conserve water over the next several months and take fire prevention measures.

Department of Water officials said they expect current and forecasted dry weather conditions to impact water service in the Kilauea area, including Wailapa and Kalihiwai.

Rainfall in Princeville, recently measured at 17.2 inches in 2007, is 43 percent below normal levels. Lihu‘e, at 10.3 inches of rainfall this year, is 41 percent below normal, according to the National Weather Service.

Water officials suggest residents save water by minimizing lawn irrigation, washing vehicles, dust control sprinkling and other nonessential uses.
