Time is ripe for homemakers to start thinking about the upcoming Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau fair scheduled for the Labor Day weekend at Vidinha Stadium.
The Kaua‘i Association for Family and Community Education and the Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau announced three special contests for the Home Show phase of the popular family fair this year.
Banana is the primary ingredient that needs to be featured for the following groups — Bread & Muffins, Cakes, Cookies and Other Banana Desserts.
Teddy Bear Express, a fun craft contest, is being introduced at this year’s fair. Entries in this contest needs to be a toy bear no taller than 18 inches. It must be dressed in a sewn or hand-crafted original creation. No commercial entries will be permitted.
Oatmeal cookies is the theme for a special baking contest that will also be featured this year.
In addition to these new areas, FC&E leaders are encouraging the public to continue entering items in the Preserved Foods, Clothing, Needlework and Arts & Crafts areas.
Judging will be done by the Danish system with ribbons and cash prizes awarded.
Best in Show earns $50, Blue ribbons earn $10, Red ribbons are worth $7 and White ribbons earn the creator $5. There will be up to seven Best in Show awards, one in each of the following classes: Preserved Foods, Clothing, Needlework, Arts & Crafts, Special Recipe Contest, Special Cookie Contest and Special Craft Contest.
Copies of the rules and information on entries can be obtained from the University of Hawai‘i Extension Office located in Room 210 of the state building on Eiwa Street in Lihu‘e.
FC&E officials said entries not meeting the rules will not be judged.
