The Hanalei School video production crew, under the direction of Melanie Herm-stad, has been a finalist in the Hawai‘i Youth Exchange Video Competition for the last four years. The contest is sponsored by ‘Olelo Public TV on O‘ahu.
“We have been among the finalists, but never the number one movie in our category,” writes Hermstad.
Things changed Wednesday when Kiana Fores and Kezia Kawaihalau won first place state wide in the elementary division for their Public Service Announcement. Lana Vali won first place in the middle school animation category.
“What a thrill for the students, teachers, parents that all were there to see the celebration,” writes Hermstad.
“Living Life without Drugs” was the topic of the winning PSA entry. The Animation film was called “Keep It Clean.” The three students from Hanalei School competed against 350 other entries from across the state.
