Capital improvement projects proposed for Kaua‘i

HONOLULU — The state budget bill which lawmakers passed out of the Legislature last week includes over $43 million for Kaua‘i capital improvement projects. House Bill 500, H.D.1, S.D.1, C.D.1 passed a final vote in the House and Senate and is now before the Governor for approval.

Throughout the 2007 session, House members focused on legislation targeted at enabling people in Hawai‘i to meet their basic needs, especially housing, healthcare, energy and education concerns. Lawmakers also sought to give meaningful tax relief to Hawai‘i residents.

The following projects are proposed in the state budget for fiscal years ‘08 and ‘09, for a grand total of $43,247,000.

Fiscal Year ‘08

Kapa‘a Elementary School, Library Design — $460,000

Kilauea Elementary School,

Cafeteria — $4,500,000

Kuhio Highway

Retaining Walls at Lumaha‘i and Wainiha — $100,000

Route 560, Slope Protection, Hanalei Hill — $100,000

Highway Improvements, Hanama‘ulu to Kapa‘a —$8,000,000

Kaua‘i High School, Gymnasium & Other Improvements — $1,775,000

Kaua‘i Planning and Action Alliance, Inc., Trail Restoration at the Napali Coast Wilderness State Park and Rebuilding of the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp at Koke‘e State Park — $1,225,000

Hawai‘i Nature Center — $500,000

Nawiliwili Harbor, Office Building — $202,000

Kaumuali‘i Hwy.,, Kuhio Hwy. and Kuamo‘o Rd. Retaining Walls — $1,500,000

Armory Renovations, Hanapepe — $1,100,000

‘Ele‘ele Elementary — $750,000

Kalaheo Elementary School,

Administration/Classroom Building — $5,000,000

Port Allen Harbor, Navigational

Improvements — $500,000

Waimea Canyon Drive/Koke‘e Rd. Improvements, Mile Post 0-14 — $2,000,000

Kaua‘i Economic Opportunity Homeless Emergency Shelter

Certified Kitchen — $73,000

Rockfall Mitigation — $800,000

Guardrail and Shoulder

Improvements on State Highway n $1,000,000

Hawai‘i Health Systems Corporation

System-Wide Seismic Mitigation Evaluation Study — $2,500,00
