HONOLULU — McKinley High School isn’t ranked No. 2 for nothing.
The Tigers took down the girls of Waimea High School hard late last night, defeating the Menehune 58-33 in the quarterfinals of the Hawaiian Airlines Girls State Basketball Division II Tournament.
McKinley showed good defense by keeping Waimea’s field goal percentage under 30 percent in both halves. All but one girl on Waimea’s team scored less than six points. Senior co-captain Moani Durant was the only one to get into double figures with 16 points.
Three of McKinley’s girls went into double digits: Kaitlyn Ikehara (18), Pearly Togiai (10) and Kylie Sato (10).
The best Waimea can finish in the tournament now is fifth place. Waimea plays Seabury Hall today, at the Farrington High School gym at 6 p.m.
