A former Kaua‘i attorney and well-known national escrow company with offices in Princeville and Lihu‘e will be held responsible for compensating a woman who was duped during the closing process on her Princeville property in 2004.
According to former Prince-ville resident Ellen Hyman, Andrew Lichtenberg, a since-disbarred attorney, intercepted her $373,000 from buyer Ken Houghton in 2004.
After a 13-day jury trial, Hyman was awarded $1 million for her losses, including attorney and court fees.
According to court documents, Title Guaranty Inc. was negligent in its handling of Hyman’s money, which Lichtenberg took out of the trust before moving abroad.
Hyman’s testimony states she was unaware Title Guaranty Inc. was involved.
Lichtenberg faces other charges in federal court, for which he is slated to be sentenced Tuesday.
