May 12 is the deadline for applications for the 20th Annual Kaua‘i Business Canoe Race coming up May 20 at the Hanama‘ulu Beach Park.
“We want to give teams time to practice so we’re currently taking applications,” said Pomai Kane of the Kaiola Canoe Club, the event host.
Additionally, the early deadline is to ensure sponsoring business names are included on the event shirts which will be sold at the race.
The teams, sponsored by local business organizations, will paddle and compete in than 1/4-mile events
Kane said the purpose of the event is to promote friendly competition between members of the Kaua‘i business community as well as give people an opportunity to experience a great state sport.
Each team will consist of five paddlers, with Kaiola Canoe Club supplying the canoe, the paddles and a steersperson for the craft.
Paddlers do not have to be employed by the sponsoring business.
Races will take place in three categories — Men, Women and Mixed. Additionally, there will be Novice and Open classifications.
Entry fee for a team is $120 with trophies and individual awards being presented to the top three crews for each category.
In addition to the race competition awards, trophies for “Best Dressed” and “Most Motivated” will also be awarded on race day.
Kaiola Canoe Club facilities will be available for team use on request and only by appointment to prevent overlapping practices. Practices are limited to just three sessions lasting between 30 to 45 minutes to allow everyone equal practice times.
