Alana Blanchard, Leila Hurst and Dylan Goodale all advanced in the winners bracket of the International Surfing Association’s World Junior Meet in Portugal.
Hurst and Blanchard finished first in their heats. Hurst scored a combined score of 12.16, defeating Francisca Santos of Portugal and Chelsea Roet of Barbados. Blanchard scored an 11.43 defeating Margarida Guerra of Portugal and Shannon Kiefer of Barbados.
Goodale finished second in his heat with a score of 12.76.
Each surfer gets to surf two rounds before being eliminated.
Thirty-one national delegations have confirmed that they will be taking part in the competition, a record that has raised expectations even higher this year.
Taking advantage of the concept of the Olympic games, Hawai‘i is taking 12 of its best junior surfers to compete in this event.
Last year the competition was held in Brazil where Hawai‘i placed third.
In 2005 Hawai‘i won the event. The team from Hawai‘i hopes to reclaim the coveted first place trophy again this year.
