Rufino Espina
Rufino “Roy” “Noi” Espina, loving husband, father, grandpa and great-grandpa, of Kapa‘a, died peacefully at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on April 7, 2007, at the age of 77.
Born in Koloa on Oct. 9, 1929, he was a decorated Korean War veteran and Purple Heart recipient. During his younger days he was employed at Lockheed, Pearl Harbor Naval Yard, then moved to Kaua‘i and worked with various contractors with Pacific Missile Range Facility until his retirement
He is survived by his wife Dolores (Largusa) Espina; daughters Roxanne (Peter) Hiltsley, Priscilla (Dennis Mitchell) Espina; son Edward (Peggy Salvador) Espina; and daughter-in-law Sharon Espina; siblings Christina Caniete, Sancho “Sandy” (Mary) Espina, Rose (Tony) Lasit, and Pete Espina; 17 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is preceded in death by sons Michael S. Espina and Gregory X. Espina; sister Louisa Taniyo and brother Albert Espina.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, April 21, at St. Catherine Church with visitation from 8 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 11 a.m. Cremation to follow.

Jimena “Pining” Dacuycuy Hernando of Hanama‘ulu died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on April 12, 2007, at the age of 76.
Born in Laoag City, Philippines, on April 17, 1930, she retired as a cook with Wailua Marina Restaurant.
She is survived by daughter Genevieve (Arnold) Cruz of Hanama‘ulu, brothers Benjamin Dacuycuy, Samuel Dacuycuy and Alfredo Dacuycuy, all of the Philippines; many grandchildren, one great-grandchild and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, April 21, at The Way of Salvation Church in Kapa‘a with visitation from 1:30 p.m. and services celebrated at 3 p.m. Burial will follow at Lihue Cemetery.

Myrtle Mae Valdez
Myrtle Mae Valdez of Pearl City, O‘ahu, and formerly of Kapa‘a, died March 26, 2007, at Kapiolani Medical Center at Pali Momi, at the age of 76.
Born March 4, 1931, in Honolulu, she was a homemaker.
She is survived by sons Rudolfo (Sarah) Valdez Jr., Alan (Brandy) Valdez, and Ty (Dori) Valdez; daughters Francine (Joseph Jr.) Tolentino, Myrtle May (Howard Sr.) Kamoku, RudyAnn (Moss Jr.) Neves, and Stephanie (Herbert) Antolin; 30 grandchildren, 45 great- grandchildren, and one grea-great-granddaughter.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, April 20, at 9 a.m. at Mililani Memorial Park-Mauka Chapel, where service will be at 10 a.m. and funeral Mass at 12:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel (1525 Waimano Home Road). Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Hawai‘i State Veterans Cemetery in Kane‘ohe.
Aloha attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Mililani Downtown Mortuary.
Rosalia Pagtulingan
Rosalia “Sally” Pagtulingan of Lihu‘e died in Las Vegas, Nev., on April 5, 2007, at the age of 73.
Born in Vintar, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, on Oct. 7, 1933, she was retired as owner of Kauai Gifts, Kauai Snacks and Sally’s Jewels.
She is survived by daughters Lily (Carlos) Giron of Las Vegas, Ruby (Doug) McMurren of Alaska and Arlene Reis of Honolulu; brothers Santiago Cadaoas, and Dennis Mabini; sisters Evelyn Johnston and Florencia Pascua; grandchildren, Desiree, Christopher, Dustin, Alexandra, Andrew; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, April 27, at Holy Cross Church with visitation from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 11 a.m.
Burial will follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens.

Eden Kaihilani Simao of ‘Ele‘ele died at home on April 15, 2007, at the age of 62.
Born in Pu‘uwai, Ni‘ihau, on Sept. 1, 1944, she was a housewife.
Preceded in death by sisters Lucy Garma and Evaline Kanahele, she is survived by her husband Dennis Simao; child Aloha (Charles) Kaliloa of Kekaha; grandchildren Benson Broyles, Ashley (Joe Kaneapua)
Broyles, Nani (Conrad Anguay) Broyles, Maka Broyles and Brandi Garma; great-grandchildren Kawena and Kauwila Kaneapua; brothers Kuhina (Kuulei) Kaaumoana of Hanapepe, George Kamala and Bernard Kamala, both of Pakala; brother-in-law George (Margaret “Tootsie“) Simao; sisters-in-law Stella (Francis) Mission and Patsy (Sam) Calves; numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation from 9:30 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 21, at the Kalaheo Missionary Church; service officiated by Pastor Ed Buller will begin at 10 a.m. Casual attire is suggested.

Alepia O. Motilla of Puhi died March 25, 2007, at Queen’s Hospital at the age of 80.
Born Jan. 12, 1927, in the Philippines, she was a field worker for Lihu‘e Plantation.
She is survived by her husband Alejandro Sabiane Motilla of Puhi; children Cresencia (Cecilio) Sagucio of Hanama‘ulu, Inocencia O. Motilla of Puhi, Placido (Remedios) Motilla of Milano, Italy, Francisco (Remegia) Motilla of Bangar, La Union, Clarito (Florida) Motilla of Puhi, and Eddie (Felyrose) Motilla of Puhi; brother Alejandro (Rosita) Orpia of Bangar, La Union; sisters-in-law Urbana Macayan of Las Vegas, Nev.; Yrinea Motilla of Hanama‘ulu; Juanita Motilla of Bangar, La Union, and Catalina Motilla of Puhi; brother-in-law Florencio (Marcelina) Motilla of Bangar, La Union; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Leonardo and Ana Orpia; sons Eusebio and Ariston Motilla; daughters Adela and Liza Motilla; brother Catalino Orpia, sisters Sinfrosa Vedana and Juanita Orpia; and brother-in-law Fermin Motilla.
Friends may visit with the family from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, April 21, at Immaculate Conception Church, where Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. by Father Bill. Burial to follow at Lihue Cemetery.

Helen Chu
Helen Bo Hing (Chang) Chu died peacefully April 16, 2007, at her home in Hanapepe Valley at the age of 89.
She was born Nov. 18, 1917, in Canton, China. At the age of 5, she, along with her father, mother and brother, relocated to Liliha, O‘ahu. After her marriage to Joseph H. Chu in 1941, the couple made their home in Hanapepe Valley. She retired from American Factors Financial as a loan administrator.
Preceded in death by her husband Joseph and son-in-law Cadman Kanahele, Sr., she is survived by daughters Rosalyn (Gilbert) Nobrega of Hanapepe Valley; Helene Kanahele of Hanapepe Valley; Josephine (Sidney) Greenly of Fountain Valley, Calif.; sons Joseph (Jane) Chu of Redondo Beach, Calif.; and Henry (Shermane) Chu of Kahului, Maui; 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
An informal visitation and viewing with the family will be on Saturday, April 21, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. A memorial service will begin promptly at 9 a.m. Sunday, April 22, with viewing to follow.
Borthwick Kauai Mortuary at 3168 Koloa Road will be hosting and burial will take place at the Hanapepe Hawaiian Cemetery. Aloha attire is requested.
Mary Anna Tangalin
Mary Anna Tangalin of Kapa‘a, died April 7, 2007, in Honolulu. Born in Washington, she was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband Thomas “Tula” Tangalin; sons Dion and John Fortuny and Andy and Thomas Tangalin; daughter Alex Greig; parents Lenard and Margaret Ford; brothers Earl, Lonnie and Steve; sisters Carol, Loretta, Rachael, Carolyn and Elizabeth and three grandchildren.
Private services were held. Arrangements were being handled by Ultimate Cremation Services of Hawai‘i.
Richard Young
Richard Chow Hin Young of Honolulu and formerly of Kaua‘i, died April 9, 2007, at Straub Hospital and Clinic at the age of 71.
Born April 11, 1935, in Kane‘ohe, he was a master printer.
He is survived by his wife Cynthia A., sons Richard A. Young of Kaua‘i, Robert A. Young of Las Vegas, Nev., John T. Young of Colorado, Joseph L. Young of California and Gary S. Cabagua Jr.; daughters Florence M. Young of Kaua‘i and Victoria L. Kahoano of California; and 25 grandchildren.
Visitation will be today at Borthwick Mortuary on O‘ahu at 10 a.m. burial to follow at 1 p.m. at Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery. Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Mortuary on O‘ahu.

Born Sept. 27, 1926, in Honolulu, she was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband George Furtado; son George Burton Furtado; daughter Gaile Michele Furtado; brother Herman Naki; sister Mele Kong; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchidren.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, April 21, at O‘ahu Cemetery Chapel. Visitation will be at 5 p.m. Service to begin at 6 p.m. The family suggests aloha attire and asks that flowers be omitted. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

John Botelho Rapozo IV of Koloa died April 15, 2007, at the age of 22.
Born Oct. 10, 1984, in Waimea, he was with TSA at Lihu‘e Airport.
He is survived by son Keola Ilai Rapozo of Koloa; mother Carol (Larry) Pimental of Waimea; father John Rapozo IÎI of Hanapepe; fiancee Veronica Llego of Waimea; brother Kainalu Games; sister Nona Rapozo, grandfather John Rapozo Jr., grandmothers Mitsue Games and Yvonne Carineo; one niece and one nephew.
Friends may visit with the family from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 20, at Borthwick Kauai Mortuary. Friends may visit with the family again from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, at Kekaha Methodist Church, where services will be at 3:30 p.m.
Patricia C. Fernandez
Patricia C. Fernandez of Kekaha died at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital on April 10, 2007, at the age of 93.
She was born in the Philippines on Feb. 26, 1914.
Fernandez is survived by sons Lorito “Letong” Fernandez of Las Vegas, Nev., and Pelane Fernandez of Kekaha; daughters Leonida (George) Fujimura of Kekaha and Clarita Ide of Kane‘ohe, O‘ahu; 19 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; brother Pedro Cabebe of Honolulu, O‘ahu; sister Esmeralda Cabebe of California; daughter-in-law Rosalia Fernandez of Kekaha; numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation with the family will be at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 21, at the Waimea Sacred Heart Catholic Church; Mass at 10:30 a.m. Inurment to follow at Kekaha Public Cemetery.

Violet Perreira
Violet Lawrence Gouveia Perreira of Lihu‘e died on April 13, 2007, at the age of 84.
Born Nov. 27, 1922, in Lihu‘e, she was a domestic engineer. She enjoyed spending quality time with friends and family and had a great passion for baking with close friends. She also took pleasure in helping people who came to her for healing, who will miss her gentle hands and caring words.
She was preceded in death by her husband Alfred Perreira and son Melvin Perreira; one brother Manuel Lawrence, and three sisters, Mary Medeiros, Josephine Cunningham, and Sandra Kaahea.
She is survived by brother Albert Lawrence Gouveia of Hanama‘ulu, sister Julia Silva of Honolulu; children Jackie (Candy) Silva of California, Patrick (Linda) Silva of the Philippines, Glenn (Cindy) Silva of Honolulu, Linda Crommy of Honolulu, Wayne (Anelle) Perreira, Corlene (Larry) Rapozo of Lihu‘e, Cheryl (Rudy) Miranda of Kilauea, and Parmalee (Dennis) Dato of Kapa‘a; 25 grandchildren; 32 great- grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 20, at Immaculate Conception Church in Kapaia. Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. with Mass at 10 a.m. followed by interment at Kauai Memorial Gardens in Lihu‘e.
