Waimea man dies in head-on collision

A 22-year-old Waimea man died in a head-on collision Sunday around 4:45 a.m., states a county press release.

John Rapozo III was eastbound on Kaumuali‘i Highway near the Halfway Bridge at mile marker 5 when a vehicle headed in the opposite direction crossed the centerline and hit him head-on.

In the county release, police state Bryston Louis, 20, of Koloa, was heading west on Kaumuali‘i Highway in a BMW sedan when he crossed the centerline and hit the Honda sedan Rapozo was driving.

Rapozo died at the scene. According to the release, Louis was transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, treated and released.

Rapozo is the third traffic-accident related fatality on Kaua‘i this year.

Calls to Kaua‘i Police Department lieutenants Mark Scribner and Ale Quibilan were not returned by press time.
