Following their Honolulu restaging on April 6 and 7, IONA Contemporary Dance Theatre will offer Kaua‘i a taste of Hawai‘i’s homegrown dance-theater phenomenon with a free community beach performance. Audiences can catch this performance at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday at Hanalei Bay (near the Hanalei Pavilion).
IONA will perform segments of their soulful and striking work, “Electric Blue,” incorporating the sand, sunset and ocean, with a spectacular blend of delicious imagery, groundbreaking messages and stunning music. One of IONA’s trademarks is bringing dance to the community through performances in unexpected places. This production captivated O‘ahu audiences in 2006 and earned the title by one of the Honolulu daily newspapers as “Best of the Best” for Live Performance — incorporating the sunset, sand, and surf as a prop, setting, and subject.
IONA has toured its work to the Neighbor Islands for the last 13 years in order to grow its statewide audience; thereby sharing one of Honolulu’s cultural gems and adding a diversely unique local aspect to the burgeoning Hawai‘i arts scene. Through the visual indulgence of IONA’s unique balance of Eastern and Western indigenous dance influences, this stunning water-themed piece addresses the healing universality and connectivity of water’s essence.
