As a service project, several Kaua‘i High School students prepared freshly baked cookies at Lotus Root bakery in Kapa‘a just for preschoolers at Kauai Independent Daycare Services School.
Teacher Heather Ryan created the collaboration so her students could participate in a community project which involved giving to others, food science, healthy habits and nutrition.
Kamuela Kamanu, Daniel Matheny and Teddy Cabulisan were among the students who offered 100 freshly baked cookies to happy KIDS School recipients.
Kuulei Johnson contributed photos of the project and also donated $100 to take the boys and their teachers to lunch after the presentation.
Ryan said she received a monetary donation from a friend to cover the cost of the ingredients. The Lotus Root bakery is owned and operated by the Blossoming Lotus Restaurant. Owner Jessica Murray taught the boys to bake with her favorite Chocolate Chip cookie recipe incorporating spelt flour, maple syrup and rolled oats. The Blossoming Lotus, located in Kapa‘a, has a world-renowned vegan menu and recipe book. The Kaua‘i High School students were able to learn a bit about vegetarian cooking, make cookies in a real bakery and share their treats with 80 eager 3- and 4-year-olds and their teachers.
KIDS School is a year round community preschool located behind First Hawaiian Bank on the beach in Kapa‘a. Registration for mid-June and August is currently happening for children born in 2004 and 2003. Tuition assistance is available.
