HONOLULU — Nathan Rex turned heads when he hit the water off Kewalo Basin Sunday.
Rex hit the lefts on the opening day of the NSSA Hawai‘i Conference RVCA Regionals to bang out 9- and 10-point rides, states a press release from the Global Surf News.
Spectators compared his moves to former NSSA standout Andy Irons, also from Kaua‘i, as Rex took the show in backhand dominating fashion in both the Explorer Mens and Open Juniors divisions.
Dylan Goodale and Koa Smith, both Kaua‘i riders, also showed strong on the opening day rounds along with Maui’s Kai Burger and Granger Larsen.
Carissa Moore in the Explorer Women and Kekoa Cazimero in the Explorer Juniors also displayed top form. Moore, last competing in Australia at the WCT Roxy Profinished runner-up. She dominated her competition at Kewalo’s, a break she uses as her training ground year-round.
Cazimero used the left to launch herself into Round 2.
