Happy Camper

Dave Walker was excited to have Gordon Scruton, a USA Track official, here to help certify some of Kaua‘i’s track officials. Scruton, who has been to several Olympic events, stayed to help with hands-on officiating at the Mayor’s Invitational Track Meet Saturday.

Earlier in the day, Anahola Joel Pahukula gave everyone a scare when he had to be released from the hospital to broadcast the KIF baseball game in Kapa‘a — hope everything’s good, Joel!

Jocelyn Awong was great on the microphone and Ron Kouchi had a nice one-word description of Game 1 — “crispy.” Nicely done, Raiders!

Hats off to Charles Kawakami and the Big Save ‘ohana on another successful Texas Hold ‘Em tournament. There weren’t as many people as the previous one, but the competition was just as keen. Congratulations to Jon Nakamura for winning the big prize.

Dickie Chang, Bruce Smalling and Eric Sakazaki are perennial figures at this action-packed event, and it’s a good thing Jason Apilado and Travis Luis of Johnson Brothers of Hawai‘i (Red Bull) had lots of Smartwater on hand.

Finally, happy birthday to Judy Lenthall of the Kaua‘i Food Bank who had a special shindig going on Saturday night at Lydgate Park … Larry Rivera entertaining along with daughter Ilima, Sue Kanoho, Beth Tokioka, Randall Francisco, Paul and Shirley Douglass, Mark and Lisa Lewis … there were some high-powered guests.

I guess that comes with an Irish birthday, and you don’t even need to wear green.
