The state Department of Transportation is seeking public comment for a proposed project to widen the Wailua Cane Haul Bridge in the northbound direction along Kuhio Highway.
The project will include other traffic improvements as well.
The one-lane Wailua Cane Haul Bridge — also known as the plantation bridge — under the project, would be widened for two lanes of car traffic. A pedestrian and bike path in the northbound direction will be incorporated. The widening work, if it begins, will be from Leho Drive to Kuamoo Road, and is tentatively scheduled to begin early next year.
State transportation officials are studying several traffic options when the cane haul bridge is closed for nearly three months of construction. One preferred option in the project’s draft environmental assessment report would temporarily convert the southbound Wailua Bridge for three lanes of traffic during the construction work to ease the traffic congestion.
The public will have 30 days to comment on the Draft EA. Send comments to: Department of Transportation, Highways Division, Planning Branch, 869 Punchbowl St., Honolulu, HI 96813
Copies of the comments should be sent to OEQC and the consultant below:
Director, Office of Environmental Quality Control, 235 South Beretania St., Suite 702, Honolulu, HI 96813
Kimura International, 1600 Kapiolani Blvd., Suite 1610, Honolulu, HI 96814
An informational meeting will be scheduled on Kaua‘i in the near future to gather public comment on the bridge widening project.
