John R. Fitzgerald
John R. “Fitz” Fitzgerald died at his home in Hemet, Calif., on Jan 29, 2007, at the age of 60.
Born on Aug. 30, 1946, in southern California, he moved to Kaua‘i in 1972. He was a union carpenter, and worked on many projects on Kaua‘i. He was an avid musician, runner, mountain biker, and waterskier during his years on Kaua‘i.
In 1993, he moved from Kaua‘i to Park City, Utah, and then back to Kaua‘i in 1999. He returned to southern California in 2004 for health reasons.
Preceded in death by his father, Thomas Fitzgerald, he is survived by son John T. A. Fitzgerald of Kapa‘a; mother Betty Vargo of Murieta, Calif.; brothers Edward (Claudia) Fitzgerald of Inglewood, Calif., and Jim (Pat) Fitzgerald of Irvine, Calif.; niece Megan Fitzgerald and nephew Matthew Fitzgerald, both of Irvine, Calif.
A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, March 11, at 3 p.m. at the Terheggen residence at 4895 Aliali Rd. in Kapa‘a.
Cremation was done by Inland Memorial Hartford Chapel, Hemet, Calif.
Geoffrey Alan Craig
Geoffrey Craig of Anahola, Kaua‘i, entered through the gates of heaven on March 1, 2007, at the age of 36.
Born on Dec. 31, 1970, in Huntington Beach, Calif., to Frank and Sue Craig, Geoff spent his childhood there attending school where he made lifelong friendships that have lasted to this day. He moved to Kaua‘i in 1992 to pursue his lifelong passion of surfing and his love of the ‘aina. Soon afterwards he met his future wife, Melanie.
His love of Kaua‘i, his ‘ohana and everyone whocrossed his path was evident in his gentle, caring and loving ways, those who knew him said..
In 1995 his parents, sister Jennifer and future brother-in-law, Ryan Rutt, joined him on Kaua‘i. He spent his years on Kaua‘i as owner of Kalalea Landscape and Maintenance.
Geoff is survived by his wife Melanie Craig, son Elijah and daughter Ruby of Anahola; maternal grandparents Ray and Wilma Smith of Drexel, Missouri; parents Frank and Sue Craig of Anahola; sister Jennifer Rutt, brother-in-law Ryan Rutt and niece Carlei Rutt of Kapa‘a; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and the entire Kells ‘ohana of Hope Valley, Rhode Island.
The family asks that friends join them for a memorial service on Saturday, March 10, at 2:30 p.m. on the beach at Anahola Beach Park. A celebration of Geoff’s life will follow at the home of John and Leila Hankinson, 5200 Aliomanu Road, Anahola. The family requests casual attire and leis are welcome.
Nancy Faye Hollander
Nancy Faye Hollander died in Sydney, Australia, on Jan. 2, 2007.
She is survived by her sister Adele Hollander and Jeff Bolman, her wonderful partner of 10 years.
Considered an amazing friend by many who knew her on Kaua‘i and across the world, she was a talented painter, photographer, artist, film director, dancer and life crafter with a contagious enthusiasm.
A ceremony will be held at her residence on Sunday, March 11, at 10 a.m. at 57062 Kuhio Highway in Ha‘ena. Look for a sign on the right after the double bridge, three driveways before Hanalei Colony Resort.
Friends and family are asked to bring food or drink to share, leis or flowers, wear happy clothes and a big smile to help keep her memory and beautiful smile in their hearts as they rejoice with Nancy’s presence by the ocean.
Harry Akira Miyake
Harry Akira Miyake of Lihu‘e, died March 1, 2007, at the age of 87.
Born March 29, 1919, on Kaua‘i, he was the retired owner and operator of a restaurant.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Makie Miyake, of Lihu‘e; daughters Bette (Gib) Gibson and Lorene (Mike) Blaser, both of California; sons Larry (Debbie) Miyake of California and Paul (Rachel) Miyake of Lihu‘e; sister Lillian Miyake; and brother Roy Miyake.
Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Friday, March 9, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel, where services will be held at 11 a.m. A celebration of his life will follow the service.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Shimeyo Horita
Shimeyo Horita of Lawai died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Feb. 23, 2007, at the age of 85.
Born in Wahiawa on July 15, 1921, she was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Haruo Horita; son Dennis (Vivian) Horita of Lawa‘i; daughters Susan (Ryoji) Suga, Gwen Ching and Annette (Glenn) Choi, all of Honolulu; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Haruko Sakai of Wahiawa; nieces, nephews and cousins. Services were private.
Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary, Ltd.
Frank Albert Cruz Sr.
Frank Albert Cruz Sr., of Lihu‘e, died at VA San Diego HealthCare System Hospital, Calif.
Born in Agana, Guam, on Sept. 25, 1948, he was a pipefitter/mechanic with Pearl Harbor US Naval Shipyard; also a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Preceded in death by brother Joseph David Cruz, he is survived by his wife, Aida; son Frank Jr.; daughters Crystal and Ariel, all of Lihu‘e; siblings Josefina C. Cruz of Guam, David M. (Rosalia) Cruz of Cypress, Calif., Francisca C. Kissinger of LaValencia, Calif., Teresita C. (Frank) Paulino of Hagatna, Guam, Lourdes C. Bamba of Hagatna, Guam, Edward P. (Maria) Cruz of Phoenix, Ariz., Victoria C. Manibusan of Alexandria, Va., Patricia C. (James) Crisostomo of Hagatna, Guam, Jean C. Cruz of Rosemond, Calif., Anthony J. Cruz of Las Vegas, Nev., and Elaine C. (Amon) Guerrero of Chalan Pago, Guam; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with family on Friday, Mar. 16, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.; rosary at 6:30 p.m. at the Garden Island Mortuary chapel; visitation also from 9 a.m. to10:45 a.m. Saturday, Mar. 17, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kalaheo; Mass officiated by Father Nap will begin at 11 a.m. followed by burial at Kauai Veterans cemetery in Hanapepe.

May Yamamoto
May Sayoko Yamamoto of Lihu‘e, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Feb. 27, 2007, at the age of 78.
Born in Holualoa, Hawai‘i on June 5, 1928, she was an office manager with the County of Kaua‘i.
She is survived by sons Roland (Robin) Yamamoto of Redmond, Wash., and Grant (Cynthia) Yamamoto of Hanama‘ulu; daughter Audrey Abe of Honolulu, O‘ahu; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Milton (Laverne) Morikami of Hilo, Morris Morikami of Kona, and Melvin (Carolyn) Morikami of Honolulu, O‘ahu; sister Daisy (Alvin) Suezaki of Kona; brother-in-law George Halili; sister-in-law Mildred Morikami; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation with family from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, at the Garden Island Mortuary chapel; service officiated by Rev. George Maeda will begin at 3 p.m. Casual attire is suggested.

Yaeko Hanzawa
Yaeko Hanzawa, formerly of Aiea, O‘ahu, died March 1, 2007, in Wailua at the age of 82.
Born April 20, 1924, she was a retired Aiea High School cafeteria worker and a member of the Gaza Yonagusuku Doshikai.
She is survived by son Stanley Hanzawa of Aiea; daughters Susan (Leland) Kahawai of Puhi and Sharon Tomita of Kaneohe. She was a loving grandmother to Jordan and Nicole Kahawai and Sarah Tomita. She is also survived by sisters Shizuko (Kenei) Yamauchi, Nobuko (Masashi) Kobashigawa and brother Seikichi Ige.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 11, at the Mililani Mortuary Mauka Chapel at noon.
Casual attire is suggested.

Leandro Yoro
Leandro Solomon Yoro of Puhi died Feb. 20, 2007, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 86.
Born March 6,1920, in Sinait, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, he was a truck driver for Grove Farm Company.
He is survived by son Ernesto Rosete (Anita S.) Yoro of Puhi; sisters Maura Yoro Luis of the Philippines and Laureana Yoro Tabanera of the Philippines; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, March 10, at Holy Cross Church in Kalaheo, where Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. by Father Nap. Burial to follow at Lihue Cemetery.

Lourdes Luis
Lourdes Luis of Lihu‘e, died Feb. 24, 2007, at Garden Isle Healthcare Center at the age of 50.
Born Oct. 7, 1956, in the Philippines, she worked in sales at Kauai Nursery & Landscaping, Inc.
She is survived by her husband Felizardo Luis; daughters Jennifer (Daryl) Toyomura; Rosemarie (Wency) Mitura, Michelle (Jennifer) Akagi and Chellyann Luis; and four grandchildren.
Friends may visit with the family from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, March 10, at Immaculate Conception Church, where Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. by Father Albert. Burial to follow at Lihue Cemetery.

Gerald Saunders
Gerald Frary Saunders died at home on Feb. 12, 2007, at the age of 59.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Gayle Christine Saunders, of Hanalei; brother Richard Alexander Saunders and sister Kathy Wingate Saunders, both of Washington.
Born on May 26, 1947, in Portland, Ore., Gerald and his family moved to Palos Verdes in South California in 1952. He graduated from UCSB in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and worked as a math teacher and carpenter. He toured the world surfing and photographing the world’s best waves. His photos have appeared in all the major surfing publications.
Celebration of life will be held on Sunday, March 11, on the North Shore beach of Waipa at 2 p.m.

Patsy Azeka
Patsy Toshiko Sekioka Azeka of Hanalei died Feb 25, 2007, at the age of 68.
Born in Honolulu, O‘ahu, on Aug. 24, 1938, she was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Hiroshi Azeka; daughters Lynn Azeka Hatke, Fran Azeka and Faye Azeka Neves; sisters Janet Motooka, Peggy Sasaki and Judy Horio; grandchild Aedan Neves Azeka.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 10 at Kapa‘a Hongwanji.
Charles Kobayashi
Charles “Masa” Kobayashi of Kaumakani died in Mountain View, Calif., on Jan. 17, 2007, at the age of 94.
Born in Makaweli on Sept. 15, 1912, he retired as a supervisor for Olokele Sugar Company.
He is survived by son Paul Kobayashi of Honolulu and daughter June (Peter) Yoshida of Mountain View, Calif.; one grandson and four great-grandchildren.
Private services were held at Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.

Beverly Harris
Beverly Namiko Harris of Kalaheo died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Feb. 23, 2007, one day short of her 70th birthday.
Born in Kalaheo on Feb. 24, 1937, she was employed as a clerk typist with the State of Hawaii Vocational Rehabilitation Service.
She is survived by son Jarrett Juichi (Teresa Aladin) Harris of Lihu‘e, granddaughter Jarresa Kiyoko Harris of Lihu‘e; mother Kiyoko Doi of Kalaheo; siblings Stanley (Kay) Doi of Kapa‘a, Jean Nishimura of Honolulu, Warren Doi of Honolulu, Glenn Doi of Honolulu; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She is preceded in death by her father, Juichi Doi, and brother, Robert Doi.
Private services were held at Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.
