The Kaua‘i Police Department is looking for answers to help a camper whose backpack and rental car were allegedly stolen yesterday morning.
According to police scanner traffic, the belongings of William McGovern, 36, were reported missing from Kauapea Beach — also known as Secret Beach, in Kilauea.
The missing personal property included the keys to the rental car, said county spokeswoman Mary Daubert, in a prepared statement.
The missing car is a two-door, orange Chevy Cobalt, with license plate: KWX 924.
McGovern left his campsite at Secret Beach at dawn yesterday only to find when he returned to his tent, that his backpack, which contained the keys to the car, was gone.
He ran up the trail to the parking lot and saw the vehicle missing, Daubert said.
After walking about two miles to the Menehune Food Mart in Kilauea, he called 911.
The case is under investigation. Police have no suspects.
Anyone with information about the missing vehicle is asked to call KPD dispatch at 241-1711 or Crime Stoppers at 241-1887.
