Report features ‘Coach Grandma,’ keiki

East Kaua‘i Y’s Men member Donna Schulze and three of her swimming students were featured in the First Hawaiian Bank annual report.

FHB contributed $35,000 to the YMCA of Kaua‘i for the new pool facilities, said Beverly Olsen in a press release.

Schulze, known to her students as “Coach Grandma,” has been teaching swimming since she was 16 years old.

Eighty-two years young, Schulze continues to volunteer her time to teach swim classes at the YMCA.

Currently the YMCA does not have a swimming pool of its own and must rent a pool to hold its summer classes.

All of that will change with the recent release of state funds and other grants like the one from FHB that will see the start of pool construction once the building at the Puhi site is completed.

The YMCA will begin construction for the island’s first Olympic-sized swimming pool, 50-meter lanes, complete with diving boards, Olsen said.

The pool will meet the required standards to allow Kaua‘i to host school state swim meets. Additionally, there will be a 20-by-40 instruction pool, one- to four-foot depth, for Coach Grandma and her keiki.
