Monday evening is the big game for both Waimea and Kaua‘i softball teams.
Following a 7-3 Waimea win last night, fans, parents and players waited for the coin toss that would determine the site for the KIF championship game.
Waimea athletic director Jon Kobayashi said the playoff between the Round 1 champion Kaua‘i and the Round 2 champion Waimea for the title will be played Monday while last night’s coin toss determined the site.
Kaua‘i won. The game will be at Isenberg Field starting at 5:30 p.m., but the Raiders have a long road ahead of them.
Even before the first pitch Wednesday, coach Darrell Borrero knew.
“Waimea has just one more game against us, but we have two more after we play them,” he said earlier in the week.
The Red Raiders travel to the New Kapa‘a Ball Park to face the Warriors in a double-header starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Including the Monday playoff game, Kaua‘i will be playing four games within a five-day period.
“But we’ll just have to see if Wailana (Kaua‘i starting pitcher) can hold out,” Darrell said of their situation.
Wailana opened the scorebooks Wednesday night with a long hit to centerfield, and coupled with her quickness around the bags, scored an in-the-park homerun in the first inning.
Kaua‘i followed that score with a Sam Koga hit that coupled with Waimea errors to score their second run on two hits in the frame.
Waimea answered in the third as a Kaua‘i error gave the Menehune the go-ahead, 3-2 behind a Shana Tafiti RBI single that coupled with a miscue to score Tatum Gonsalves. Another Kaua‘i error saw two Whitney Yadao and Tafiti scoring for the lead.
Tafiti upped the lead in the seventh with a 2-RBI shot that coupled with another Kaua‘i error to score Yadao and Mata, Tafiti crossing the plate on a Cassie Koerte RBI single.
Kaua‘i could only muster a run in the fifth as Krystal Ijima drove Wailana across the plate with two outs.
