Kilikai Ahuna will have a chance few other 6-year-olds will have.
On New Year’s Eve, while other Kauaians celebrate, Ahuna will be racing at the Glen Helen MX Raceway Park in a ProAm National.
Ahuna has also been invited to race in the Supercross in Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif., for the KTM Challenge.
“This is quite an honor for a little 6-year-old,” Kanoe Ahuna, Kilikai’s mom, said. “He’ll be racing in front of more than 50,000 people.”
Ahuna’s KTM Dealer sponsor is Two Wheels, Kaua‘i.
Racing since the age of 2, Kilikai currently tips the scales at 55 pounds and stands 3 feet, 10 inches.
A Yamaha PW50 launched the young Ahuna’s career, graduating to a Suzuki JR50 at 3 years old.
These were followed by Ahuna racing atop a Honda CR50 when he was 4 and, over the last two years, a KTM SX Pro Senior 50.
During the October KMRA Race — Kaua‘i Moto-X Super Race, Series 4, Ahuna earned two first-place finishes: one in the Mini A and the other in the 65B.
He also earned top honors in the 50cc 7-8 Stock class at the Starwest Sizzlin’ Summer Series in Starwest, Perris, Calif., in September.
Other awards include the Dodge Amateur Nationals 2006 in Hangtown, Prairie City, Sacramento, Calif., where the Anahola youngster finished 19th in the 50cc Open and 21st in the 50cc 7-8 Stock.
Moving to Canyon Land MX Park in Phoenix, Ariz., Ahuna finished third in the 50cc 4-6 division at the WORCS Race, Round 10.
His current roster of sponsors include BC Automotive, Unlimited Mortgage, Renthal and Factory Backing.
According to Steve Lewis of Suzuki Kaua‘i, there are a few other Kaua‘i youngsters heading to the Mainland in an attempt at qualifying for the Nationals coming up later in 2007 in Tennessee.
Lewis said the Carvalho brothers in the 85cc class will be participating in a Florida qualifier as well as qualifying events in Alabama.
