A 78-year-old Kapa‘a woman was killed yesterday morning when she was hit by a truck on Kawaihau Road.
Theresa Fujitani was pronounced dead at Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
According to police, the 28-year-old driver of a pick-up truck and his 22-year-old passenger were heading towards Kapa‘a Elementary School on Kawaihau Road near Malakea Street when the truck ran off the road and struck Fujitani on the sidewalk at about 7 a.m.
The vehicle then slammed into a nearby utility pole before coming to a stop, county spokeswoman Mary Daubert said.
The driver of the pick-up and his passenger were also brought to Wilcox for treatment.
Police said preliminary reports indicate speed and medication were possible factors in the case.
Fujitani is the 14th traffic fatality on Kaua‘i this year.
