Global Surf News yesterday announced the cancellation of the Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic by Patagonia.
The event was denied a Shore Water Event permit from the City and County of Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation on June 23, and had been trying to get things resolved for the contest, scheduled for the end of this year.
“We apologize for the delay in announcing the status of the event as we were making efforts to salvage enough time to run the contest on another contest holding period,” organizers of the bodysurfing event said in a GSN release.
“We are currently asking that bodysurfers and other concerned individuals and organizations not contact the City and County of Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation office,” organizers said on Dec. 19 on www.pipebodysurf.com.
Instead, organizers are asking interested people to become involved in the process the city uses to determine which events are offered shore water permits.
“We are in the process of forming a committee who is well-briefed on the legal and bureaucratic issues involved (and) will be circulating information regarding efforts to prevent this problem from resurfacing in the near future,” states the pipebodysurf Web site.
The organizers said they are involved in establishing an international organization with domestic and local offices in Hawai‘i to act as an advocate regarding bodysurfing issues.
