Despite the hectic holiday schedule, Kaua‘i’s sport groups found time to give back to the community.
The Waimea High School girls softball team, enjoying a bye Saturday, headlined some of the Westside groups that took part in the 11th Annual Waimea Lighted Parade.
“It’s going to be different the next round,” head coach Teddy Pereira said from his vantage point aboard a golf cart that shepherded the flock.
The Kekaha Pop Warner Association took advantage of the community event to showcase their Junior Pee Wee cheerleaders, who earned silver at the recent National Pop Warner Cheer and Dance competition in Orlando, Fla.
The Midget cheer squad served as banner girls for the winners of the JPW Advanced division.
Members of the Hanapepe Colt Pop Warner Association cheer squads that also placed high in the national competition were also on hand to thank the community.
On the other side of town, Kaua‘i High School head coach Mark Brandeburg said his boys soccer squad visited the Wilcox Hospital long-term care unit to offer Christmas carols to the staff and patients.
“This is the fifth year the boys have been doing this,” Brandeburg said in an e-mail. “As always, the boys were nervous at first, but once they got singing, they truly enjoyed it. Even the nurses were singing along. It was good fun.”
For the Pop Warner pepsters, their season is over until next fall, but Kaua‘i High boys’ soccer takes the field Saturday at Hanapepe Stadium against Waimea at 1:30 p.m.
The Waimea High School softball girls have a week to prepare for Round 2, which starts Jan. 3, when they travel to the New Kapa‘a Ball Park for a single game against the Warriors at 5:30 p.m.
