OK. I have to say it:
“I wish I knew how to quit you.”
Any guesses on where that’s from? You guessed it. Last year’s Oscar contender for Best Picture, “Brokeback Mountain.”
That was one of the major catch phrases of the year, and yet so appropriate when it comes to me and my obsession with the Academy Awards and the ceremony’s new poster.
Earlier this week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled this years official commemorative poster.
The prestigious statuette stands in front of a black background with dozens of the most memorable and quotable lines from Best Picture-nominated films that have become part of society’s colloquial speech.
Classic lines like, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn!” from “Gone with the Wind,” “Rosebud” from “Citizen Kane,” “I coulda’ had class. I coulda’ been a contender,” from “On the Waterfront,” and more recent ones like “Don’t jive me, man” from “Ray” and “No, if anyone orders Merlot, I’m leaving” from “Sideways” made the cut.
“They are the unforgettable lines that you hear in everyday conversations, in meetings, at parties, or walking down the street,” Sid Ganis, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, said in a release. “They tap into what we think and give us great shorthand ways to express how we feel about those things. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then each quote is worth at least 500.”
The 27-by-40-inch poster, printed on premium recycled paper, uses a black canvas and highlights the quotes in gold metallic ink, each in a distinctive typeface to reflect the movie it represents. I’ve already ordered mine.
This is actually the second wave of my Oscar mania. I’ve had a note posted on my wall here at The Garden Island with “Oscar nominations: Jan. 23, 5:30 a.m.” written on it with black permanent ink for weeks.
I’m so on that one. I’ve even got an image of the poster as my wallpaper on my computer.
The academy started distributing 65,000 posters Tuesday. To order the poster or play Oscar trivia games, visit www.oscars.org. The posters are $25 each.
Can you match these quotes with the movie they’re from? I’ll start with easy ones and then make it more complicated.
Give yourself bonus points if you know the year in which they were released. Good luck.
1) “I’ll get you, my pretty, and your little dog, too!”
2) “Frailty, thy name is woman!”
3) “All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.”
4) “I am not an animal. I am a human being. I am a man.”
5) “Remember those posters that said ‘Today is the first day of the rest of your life?’ Well that’s true of every day except the one — the day you die.”
A) “The Elephant Man”
B) “American Beauty”
C) “Hamlet”
D) “The Bridge on the River Kwai”
E) “The Wizard of Oz”
Comedienne Ellen DeGeneres hosts the Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on Feb. 25. Be on the lookout for the nominations next month and Oscar predictions in February.
Till then, “Here’s looking at you, kid.”
Answers: 1) E 2) C 3) D 4) A 5) B.
