HONOLULU — Under the direction of head coach Ro Davis, ten swimmers from Swim Kaua‘i Aquatics made a strong showing at the Ben Suenaga Invitational on O‘ahu over the weekend.
“Results from the Pearl City Invitational were nothing short of spectacular,” said Davis in an e-mail. “Swim Kaua‘i placed 15th in the Overall Team Standings, and was the top team from Kaua‘i as a result. SKA’s Open Girls relay scored points for the team in all three events they competed in.”
Michelle Woltmon, Emma Rausch, Sonya James and Alanna Reynolds made up that team.
Additionally, James Papa, Anya Littlefield, Jenny Lyon-Mackie and Reynolds posted a “perfect” meet where they improved in all of the events they swam in.
Papa, 10, had the greatest improvement in the 50 Back (44:34Y) where he shaved 3.95 off his previous time. He competed in four events.
Littlefield, 12, competed in eight events with her greatest improvement coming in the 100 IM where she chopped 4.41 off her previous time. Lyon-Mackie, 10, competed in seven events with her greatest degree of improvement coming in the 100 IM (1:31.70Y) where she was 4.81 faster than before.
Reynolds, 18, competed in four events and posted her best improvement in the 100 Back (1:12.22Y), cutting 2.67 off her previous time.
Davis said in addition to the “perfect” swimmers, Ryann Linthicum, Aaron Pigott and Matt Ross were nearly as successful in improvements.
“Matt will lead our team to states,” Davis said. “As of two months ago, Matt had no state qualifying times. Since he joined our team, he has improved tremendously and his hard work and dedication are an inspiration to all of our team.”
Ross posted qualifying times in the 100 Breast (1:10.95Y), 100 Back (1:03.60Y), 100 Free (54.37Y) and 200 Back (2:16.28Y).
Davis said Ross missed times in four other events by just tenths of a second in total time.
Based on this meet as well as earlier meets, SKA now has seven swimmers qualified for the Hawai‘i State Age Group Short Course Championships which will be held on the Big Island Dec. 15-18.
Woltmon also swam a number of best times despite taking time off to shoot for the Island School Air Riflery team, Davis said. She is just off state cuts in several events and just missed her cut in the 200 Back in two separate tries.
“Michelle is swimming in the very competitive 15-16 age group,” Davis said. “If she were 17, she would have state times in all her events.”
SKA was represented by 10 swimmers out of 16 who qualified for the event.
